Next Blog Please!

Ok, I was next-blogging my way through the last of my evening when I came across http://curlingcanada.blogspot.com

Can someone please explain curling to me? I just don't get it. Pushing an object shaped like a teakettle along the ice, using a broom. Is this some sort of old traditional activity? It looks more like something invented when a bunch of guys had too many Mooseheads and their brains froze into beer slushies.

Are people who "curl" (assuming that's the verb, or is it "play curling" like "play tennis"?) really athletes? How do they train - by sweeping floors? Curling seems like fishing and bowling - s0mething to do while drinking beer. Beer's got to be in this picture someplace!

Funny, I think that you "next blogged" to me, which I do all the time too! I think it's a neat way to see so many different blogs, and you seem to inevitably land on cool ones, like this... :)

Plus, I see that you have a link to Dave Barry, who I totally LOVE. My 11th grade English teacher got me hooked on him.

Curling is a bit like shuffleboard on ice, except you slide 42-pound rocks down the ice. The person doing the sliding gives the handle a bit of a turn as s/he lets go of the rock, and so the rock curves [curls] as it slides - a bit the way a curveball works in baseball.

The sweepers make the pebbled ice warmer, the harder and faster they sweep; and if the ice is made warm, the rock slides farther and straighter. So the path the rock takes and its final resting spot are determined by how hard the person slides the rock and how much the sweepers sweep.

Believe it or not, lots of people love watching it even though they have never played it. I had watched on television for twenty years before starting to play myself only this year.

And, yes, beer is involved, but usually after the game.

btw, I am one of the bloggers at CurlingCanada. Thanks for visiting our blog!

I hope to see curling form the plot for a future episode of the Simpsons. Americans need to be introduced to this important Canadian subculture. The Simpsons would be a perfect vehicle. I envision the Lutheran minister having a lot of lines in this episode. Marge and her sisters could form a women's team.

I first came across this sport while everyone was obsessed with the Olympics.
My boyfriend and I were obsessed with the Beer Olympics (yes, shows our class), and a portion of the televised coverage was dedicated to beer curling.
Now THAT I can understand...
And thanks for dropping by and commenting on my blog!

I dunno about curling, but hockey's a good time. I have to say I'm more of a vodka girl than a beer girl though...

Anyway, thanks for stopping by on my blog! Keep up the good work on yours! :0)

I'm not a fan of curling myself but I *do* know that Canadians are currently obsessed with it and will drop all other social commitments to catch the match-of-the-day on television!

You should rent the movie "Men with Brooms" which is a comedy/satire about curling produced by Paul Gross (the Mountie in the show Due South). Very funny!!

Thanks for dropping caipirissima and commenting!
