O Canada!

Here's something for everyone to look forward to: In May, the cast and crew of "Herding Cats" will travel to Toronto to see the Citizen's side of the family. In the meantime, if anyone has some helpful hints regarding travelling with small children, said hints will be most welcome.

Due to the Citizen's travel for business, we have accumulated alot of hotel points (like frequent flyer miles). I thought it might be a good idea to practice with the Branch and Blossom by staying overnight at a hotel locally prior to the trip.

Avonnah: We are flying. The toy planes and books are a good idea. Even a pre-flight trip to the airport just to watch the planes land and take off wouldn't be too difficult. All we'd have to pay for is parking.

Groovyvic: I know the Benadryl trick because my cousin's ex-wife used it on their kids! I thought hotels didn't have too many knick-knacks and everything is bolted down. I have a pack-n-play but it got all gross from leaving it outside. Plus the Branch may be too big lying down.

Travelling with kids can be anything from a joy to a nightmare. Usually somewhere closer to joy, although when I travel, I somehow get seated next to the nightmares.

I'm trying to recal mental notes from our flights - there were four longs ones, consisting of 10 hours each.

I breastfed during each take-off and landing due to ear pressure so I'd take something they can suck on to relieve that (bottle, pacifier).

If, for any reason, you have to take two flights I'd spread it out over two days (a flight a day) as the rest inbetween makes a HUGE difference.

We took Hugo out a lot before the trip so he would get used to sleeping in different locations. I also started shifting his nap/bed times to prepare for the time difference and jet lag.

I also took basic babyproofing stuff with me for hotel rooms (power socket covers, toilet seat latch, masking tape) and organised with the in-laws to babyproof their house on our arrival. If you'll be driving a lot you may want to look into taking your own car seats or see if Citizen's family can source a good second hand one in the meantime.

This is all I can think of for now - will let you know if anything else comes to mind!

Kazimi had a lot of good points. My suggestion involves food. Take loads of little baggies of whatever they love the most and tiny little containers for them to eat from. put together big baggies with new treats for the plane. Give each child a bag with whatever they're old enough to enjoy.

Looks like you have gotten a lot of really good advice. I would add that bringing along the baby monitor is nice too for the hotel stay. Ours was battery opperated, so we would put the kids down to sleep in the hotel room and lock them in safely and then go down the hall to the lobby at night with the monitor and play cards, watch tv or visit with our friends. If they started to wake up or fuss we were just a few doors down.

Stringman: I know, I do feel guilty about the potential bother to others. That's why we haven't travelled with the kids so far! I well remember being on the "other" side of the travel-with-kids experience!

Kazumi: These are some excellent ideas. I'm going to compile a list of all the good ideas I got in these comments. I knew you would help because you just travelled to Canada yourself, from Australia and that's a LONG trip!

Lin: Ya, we will definitely stock up on treats. You have to do that anyway, since you never know when you may see food again once you get on a plane!
