Frighteningly Easy
Yesterday I had to order a certified copy of my birth certificate in preparation for travel to Canada. It was scary how easy it was to order the birth certificate online and pay with a credit card. I called prior to making the order and was told there would be NO problem since the name on the credit card was different from the birth name due to marriage.
More than 10 years ago I ordered a copy in person (yes, I lost it, shame on me. It got packed away somewhere during moving). I was not even asked for any picture ID at the time. Anyone could have walked in and got my birth certificate.
No wonder I.D. theft is rampant.

Just wanted to thank you for you kind words on my blog, it was most appreciated.
You know what's funny? A few years ago I lived in NJ and went to get my driver's license renewed. They would NOT renew my license and give me an NJ license even though I had all the info that my husband had with him and he was allowed to get his. The reason why? I didn't have my marriage certificate with me. I'm surprised it was so easy for you because in NJ, they made my life a living hell!
Thanks for all your comments on my Eagle site. You should check out my regular one too. I think you'd like the banner and some of the other stuff on it. http://www.blackbeltmama.typepad.com

I hope I'll never need to order my birth certificate, because it's in Charleston, SC and I wouldn't know where to begin in contacting them. Pretty soon I need to get my MD driver's license and they make it quite a hassle because this is the state where the 9/11 terrorists obtained licenses. Robi had to make 2 trips because they were so specific and he needed proof of legal residency whereas in the past that was never required.
It's harder to buy a case of beer than it is to get a copy of your BC. No wonder identity theft is so rampant!
Trip to Canada, Nice! hope you have a good time. In Viet nam, Women do not change our name after married.
That is disturbing. Have a nice trip though!
It is scary. Anybody who really wants to change or steal an identity can tell you just how easy it is to do.
Interesting that in Las Vegas, they really double and triple check your ID for any credit card charges you want to make. There are no fools in that town, let me tell you!
Safe trip, Juni!
It is scary. I think 20 years ago it was much worse, then even ss cards were easier to get.
hi,
do update soon :)
Try getting a death certificate. I had to send my Mom's in for my gandfathers estate settlement. They just wanted her date of death and what her full name was and my i.d.. (Oh, and $7).
Hi Junebee.
Isn't it odd how easy things like that can be...and then something that seems like it will be easy is often quite difficult?
Anyway, I just checked out your alphabetical quiz...I'll try to be by more often...It's been too long!
Your Pal,
Zambo.
I, too, have ordered vital records online. I appreciate the convenience but it does make you think.
My sister went to city hall to get a birth certificate. For whatever reason she also got our late mother's records.
That's when we discovered that our mother had been married once before her marriage to our father!
I wonder what my kids will find out about me when they need vital records. Eeep.
Eve: You're so welcome. Our cats mean everything to us.
J: Okay let me check out the Typepad one too.
Crystal: Wow, just to get a DL? It seems pretty easy to get one here, but then, I've had mine for quite some time.
Spiderwalk: For sure. It's ridiculous, they go overboard with carding for alcohol. And underage people still get it anyway.
Godknows: I know, they don't in China either (where my husband is from).
Wendy: Thanks, we're looking forward to it.
Stringman: If I ever go to Vegas, I'll take my BC too! Just in case!
Liz: Yeah, but BC's were probably harder to get! For one thing, you couldn't order them off the Internet...
Black Feline: Point well taken.
Brandy: Never had to apply for a DC and hopefully won't have to soon. How sad.
Zambo: Ya, buying a beer can be alot harder. Well, at least we won't have any terrorists buying beer, dammit!
Sarah O: Wow, that must have been a surprise.
